Wool-blend and felting

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 5:52 PM
So I feel like a real dumbass right now. I had two skeins of Berroco's 'Foliage' hanging around, but without their labels. I knew Berroco made them, and I'm working on a project that requires felting. They looked and felt like wool, and I was away from a computer at the time, so I decided to cast on.

Turns out they're a wool blend (53% New Wool, 47% Acrylic). I'm almost done with this project, and it uses other yarns (Noro Kureyon), so taking it apart would really suck.

What are the chances this thing will felt?

PS: I am totally aware that I am a dumbass, but I've had those skeins for almost two years and I lost the labels between now and then.

I'm back again.

I really hope that this isn't in the memories somewhere, because I did look, I promise you. I mentioned to my mum that I'd like to get a sewing machine for my birthday/christmas but she had no idea what to look for.

Thinking about it, nor do I. Are there specific things you look for in a sewing machine that are important for corsetry?
I can't afford to spend a lot of money. Would any of these options work do you think?

I haven't looked anywhere other than Wal-Mart yet, but I certainly will.

Thank you :)

Rusting Busk

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 1:49 AM
Has anyone ever had a busk start rusting on them? I take good care of my corsets but just noticed that one of my older corsets has rust building up on the busk :( Is there anyway to remove this and stop it without ruining the corset? I'm really hoping I don't have to take it apart to replace the busk

knitting ooops

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 8:35 AM
So I just knitted 2 RIGHT mittens. Q$%&! I wanted one for myself but not like this. I was following the directions which said knit as right mitten until the gusset but got to the gusset and forgot to switch to the left instructions. I was scared to frog back, it had been one of those days. *Sigh*

Now confess your ooops.

baby knitting

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 12:30 AM
Does anyone here know how to knit baby wool longies? I have some gorgeous handspun christmas colored yarn that has been sitting here for a few months. I would love to see something done with it before the holidays =]

Broken Busk?

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 12:03 AM
I recently posted a picture of a corset I made for a friend of mine here: (http://community.livejournal.com/corsetmakers/1695792.html) and she wore it once and just told me when she went to unhook the busk, one of the hooks was gone?!!! Has anyone even heard of this happening ever? It is of course a brand new busk that I ordered from corsetmaking.com and I inserted it the same way I always do. I would never reuse an old busk or anything like that. I just can't imagine what would cause this to happen...a defect?
I've never had to deconstruct a corset and put in a whole new busk, but it looks like that's what I'll have to do. I haven't got the corset back yet, but I'll try and post photos once I have it.

Ripple blankets

  • Nov. 22nd, 2009 at 11:38 PM
My Mom started to make a ripple blanket for my cousin but after a few months it really aggravated the arthritis in her shoulder so she had to stop. She asked me to finish it and last winter I worked on it for a few weeks before I got sick of it. I just started working on it again since my cousin is going through a rough time right now and she has been asking for since last year. Never again! I'm calling this thing the widow maker. I have carpel tunnel and normally crocheting doesn't bother it too much but this blanket is killing me. It takes me an half hour to finish a row and I have to count the whole time or I'll mess it up. It's wide enough to fit a full sized bed and there is so much left to do on it.

If anyone has made this blanket how do you do it? I'll post pics of it whenever it's done because it is really pretty.

Felting question

  • Nov. 22nd, 2009 at 8:10 PM
So my washing machine is well and truly deceased. I will be getting another in the next day or two. I know that front loaders are considered more economical and water saving, but I've heard that you can't felt in a front loader. Is this true? And for what reasons?

CONSENSUS: Lots of people felt in a front loader with no problems, some are unable to stop mid-cycle to check, some can. Most agree that it is not even particularly necessary to interrupt the cycle. Thanks to all!

Hello, I'm not only new to this community but also to corsets in general.

I'm only 14 so I'm not into the whole "making my waist look excessively small" thing. I just have a fascination with all things from old time periods. As a young girl I always dreamed of being a rich girl in the 1800's and often feel like I've been plonked in the wrong time period. There's just something about an elegant dress and a corset that is really appealing to me.

I'm not going to lie, I'm not a great sewer. I've made a few things, but I don't yet have a sewing machine (Something I'm hoping to acquire for my birthday next month) but I'm really interested in making myself a basic corset. It may sound a little weird but I love the elegant feeling, like I'm from the past.. (I'm not creepy, I just love things from the past)

Since I'm new to this, I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. So If you don't mind bearing with me, I have a few questions I'd like answering.

What would be a basic, easy corset to try and sew ? I'm a kind of trial and error person, so I'd have no touble with working on this for a while

Pattens? Is there anyway to get them? Or would I have to buy/make my own?

How hard are they to make? I know this is kind of a hard question to answer, but I keep hearing about how experienced you have to be.

What materials do you generally use? Can you buy them from a fabric shop?

Are there any tutorials out there on making a corset?

Anything you can tell me about corsets would be really helpful. I'm sorry I know I sound like a such a newbie, but I'm really eager to learn :D

Christmas Sale

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 10:17 AM
Hey there.

Merry Xmas from Silk Orchid Corsetry.

As a thank you to my clients past and present I would like to offer a 10% discount on orders placed in between today and Christmas eve, a little gift to you.

I require a deposit to be paid before Christmas Eve for the order to be legitimate and the sooner paid the sooner I can start work on your new Corset.

I would just like to take a moment to point out however, that it would be unlikely that I would have all orders finished before New Years Eve, so if you were wanting something quickly please order straight away so I can get started.

Please email me at Cassi@silkorchid.com.au to discuss ideas and prices

Hi, you maybe normally know me as [info]delirium71 this is my business face LJ

I was holding back on these samples as I was hoping to take part in a Christmas shopping weekender locally. However the venue has gone into administration causing the event to be cancelled. So rather than them taking up space in my workroom I'm offering them for sale on my Etsy shop.

Neither corset has been worn, or even tried on. They were simply test samples.

Corset Noooooooob

  • Nov. 22nd, 2009 at 2:08 PM
Hello Corsetry, I am a noob seeking your guidance. For the past couple of weeks I have been scouring the internet in search of my perfect corset, but I have not yet been able to find it. I find this strange, because my corset is extremely simple. My corset is black, and has no frills, tassels, beads, bows, or lace. It is plain. It is also low cut in front, and has a low back. I have even drawn you a picture so you can see what is in my head:

Why is it that everything I find is decorative? I don't want decorations, because they would cause strange bumps under my fabric, or stick out. I just want a plain, functional corset. I'm certain that they exist, I just can't seem to find them!

Here's where I start to wonder, is it possible to get this corset for less than $100? Like I said, I'm a total noob, And in my seraching I've seen a wide price range for corsets, and personally, I'd like to spend as little as possible while still getting a functional piece.

So my question really is, what is the best place to find affordable, plain corsets? Or do any of you have a corset that you would sell me? My measurements are 40in bust, 33in underbust, 32in waist, 42in hips.

Thank you for reading my post, I will be very grateful for any information you can give me.

Bone placement question...

  • Nov. 22nd, 2009 at 10:43 AM
See full size imageWhen making a corset with these seaming details, do you generally have the boning follow the seams, or do they still go vertically?

edit for more info

This is the draft.

and this is what it looks like on. I have the boning on the seamlines in the mockup...
She is a very straight no waist, no squish kinda girl...

Hi guys.

I have so many projects going on at once right now. But this is the first that I finished. Its a scarf for a friends birthday. I got the pattern from http://crochetme.com/patterns/zen-and-art-stash-diving . And I added twisted beaded fringe to make it a little bit more of my own. I like it a lot even though my sister tells me its too skinny. I hope she likes it as well :)
Tada! )Happy hookin!

what would you say?

  • Nov. 22nd, 2009 at 7:13 AM
Question for ya'll:

What would you say to someone who doesn't believe in life after death because he/she doesn't know for certain it happens so therefore, they don't believe it? What would you say to someone who is okay with not being with the people they love after they die because they don't want to get their hopes up about something they aren't sure is going to happen?

Thanks in advance misfits.

This FO makes me smile. If a shot glass cozy isn't your cup of tea, it doubles as a napkin ring.

Baby Booties

  • Nov. 21st, 2009 at 6:13 PM
Pattern from Ravelry, yarn from "Red Heart Heart & Sole (with aloe)" in "Mellow Stripe":

Saartje's Bootees by Saartje de  )
I've been waiting for someone to have a baby just so I can make baby booties! The little loops to go around the button are kinda confusing for me, but I'm pretty happy with them. The only fear? Baby grabbing their foot with their mouth (cuz they’re bendy like that) and swallowing the cute buttons. So I went in and quadruply secured the buttons. I will also warn my friend of the buttons so now officially, the blame is no longer on me. please do not choke on a button…please do not choke on a button

Border

  • Nov. 21st, 2009 at 6:20 PM
I am making a very large single-stitch graph afghan of the Swedish flag for a Christmas present. It's been a beast of a project, but I'm in the home stretch.

I'd like to put a border around the edge. Because it's single stitch, 5.5mm, with worsted yarn, it's a very flat, slightly loose blanket.

I'm picturing a border that has some thickness to it - something you could reach down and grab and it would be substantial in your hand as you pull it up further on the bed. I want it to be as simple as possible so as not to distract from the design of the afghan itself.

I have been looking for a good pattern for this but am striking out - any suggestions?

I have also considered experimenting; something with a whole bunch of post stitches in a row, possibly.
