Aeolian shawl in Sea Silk )
Definitely one of my favourite patterns ever!

Hand-spun, hand-dyed beret hat thingy )
I loved making my own yarn and dying it! What a fun experience!

Calystegia cowl )
First time working with Malabrigo... instant love!!!

Victorian Lace Today Capelet )
I actually hated pretty much every aspect of making this shawl. It was really boring, and took FOREVER and although it looks great, I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone who doesn't have INFINITE patience!

PS: I would really love new friends on Ravelry (I'm shystreet on there!) :) bye!

one row high stripe?

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 4:24 PM
I'm trying to knit a hat that has some stripes in it. Is it possible to have just one stripe, one row high, and not have a jog? I've Googled a bunch and come across the jogless stripes technique, but does this work for just one row? I've also come across the barber pole technique, but I want just the one stripe.

Does such a thing exist?

EDIT TO ADD: I'm knitting this hat in the round :)

New Desert Orchid Corset

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 11:24 PM
She came to me on Halloween :)

More pictures in my blog

Unfortunately I don't yet have a modesty panel for her *(it's kind of a funny story) so for now I won't be wearing her out any time soon. But goodness, I just can't stop staring at her.

*Bethan forgot to put it in when she shipped the corset and then the Royal Mail appeared to have misplaced it when she did so now there's a second one on the way. Hopefully that one arrives. Haha

Atypically Knit HP Scarves

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 5:23 PM
My brother requested a Gryffindor scarf for christmas, and I was pretty set on knitting him one of the scarves from knit.atypically.net. Alas, the website is offline now and the GoogleCache doesn't work for the patterns, which is really disappointing.

So, can anyone recommend a good Harry Potter scarf pattern? I don't want to do an illusion scarf, just a simple stockinette stitch scarf, so something along those veins would be perfect :)

Thanks.

Veteran's Day Red Poppy

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 12:17 PM
In honor of Veteran's Day and for all the soldiers across the ages and throughout the world who have been willing to die to protect their country and their loved ones, here is a red poppy pattern. Wear your poppy proudly!

The pattern is available for free from my website.
Hello there!

I'm looking to purchase a Bibian Blue charlotte corset from fairygothmother  as something a bit more afordable, but of good quality] after my latest custom-made splurge. Does anyone have any experience with Bibian Blue corsets? Do they hold up well?  I'm particularly worried about the back lacing setup, as i'm used to the traditional grommets, and this corset has something different. Do these withstand consistant wearing and lacing for a 3-5" reduction each time? The picture of the back of the corset on fairygothmother seems to show that the boning in the back is bending.

Any insight would be highly appreciated before I drop this kind of money haha.

Thoughts...?

The word I was going for to describe the coutil wasn't thick. It was dense or stiff. *hangs head in shame...again.*

Corset contracts

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 11:00 AM

I had problems recently with a customer who didn't like the price I charged her for making a corset and she wasn't going to pay. Unfortunately I was stupid and had already delivered the corset... There was a post mentioned a while ago on making customers sign a contract. Can someone direct me to it?

Also I would love your input on what to put into the contract. A 50% deposit upfront is a definite, but what else? Extra trims to be charged extra... Help

Reversible Edwardian Waist Cincher

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 11:08 PM
My latest commissioned corset is a fully reversible waist cincher, with red satin on one side and black satin on the other. The core is two layers of coutil, boned with 1/2" flats except for either side of the grommets, which is 1/4" flats. Piecing is seven panels per side, for greater stability despite the hourglass figure. When drafting, I try not to create panels that are more than 2.5" inches wider than the hip than waistline, because that creates too much bias and makes the pattern more prone to turning out larger at the hip than intended.

I have found satin to be unforgiving when added as a cover layer at the end, so I treated each cover panel and its corresponding core panel as a single layer when assembling the panels. The stitches are made with buttonhole thread from the red side, on the assumption that if the black side is not precisely lined up with the red side, any slight variations in stitch position relative to seam will be hidden by black-on-black.

So You Think You Can Dance week 3

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 12:17 AM

Okay, time to start recapping SYTYCD!

Karen, the Latin dancer who is weekly turning Adam straight, talks about how she and her dancer husband split up after he was cut in Vegas. What will happen to Ryan and Ashleigh when one of them gets cut, I wonder? She and hip-hop Kevin are doing the Hustle. I freaking love the Hustle. That's my childhood, the Hustle. I'm not crazy about Kevin in this dance. I can't tell if it's the choreography or his dancing I don't like, but his legs feel stiff and kind of gsllumphing. He almost dropped her when it was over, but they played it off beautifully. The judges love what Kevin did, so apparently it was the choreography I didn't like. I'll go with that, I like Kevin a lot, generally.

Ashleigh says that she is a big nerd and tells us what she studied in college, etc. Ashleigh thinks America thinks she's a dummy. She and Jakob are doing a jazz routine with a cane. A cane that has been given no meaning but that it's the third member of their dance. They are dancing to Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood with the line "When you wanna come" taken out. Really? It's kind of like when the Stones had to sing "Let's spend some time together" rather than "Let's spend the night together," they aren't fooling anyone, we all know the lyrics, Fox. Besides that, it's a really great dance. And Jakob is just as awesome as the judges keep telling him he is. He and Ashleigh are really terrific together.

Pauline and Peter, the last tapper standing, are next. They are doing the quickstep, aka the kiss of death. I think it's great, helps that there is a good story, but Peter's frame sucks. Adam agrees that the story helped the kiss of death aspect of it. Nigel says that the technique wasn't great, but that he didn't care a bit because the performance was so good. And only in the dreaded quickstep can Mary's comment that it wasn't a trainwreck be looked at as a rave review!

Kathryn and Legacy are doing a Broadway dance. Dear God I hope it's not by terrible Tyce. Hooray, it's by someone named Andy instead! And it was terrific! I really love both of these dancers, but I have such a crush on Legacy that I could hardly watch her. He is so cute. She is not getting good notices, but he is.

Channing and Victor, new partners, are doing a contemporary routine about a toxic relationship. Victor better prove himself worthy for not having left last week, when I thought he should have. Wow. Okay. I accept that he stayed instead of Philip, that was incredible. And amazing choreography. Nigel is being picky that it was contemporary and they are both contemporary dancers and it was only great, not a trancendence to make the stars seem dim. I'm thinking that Nigel's standards are a teeny bit lofty.

Ellenore and Ryan are next. Ryan again telling us how heterosexual he is. Lil C is choreographing! He never choreographed a single thing last season, I'm looking forward to seeing this. Um? What the fuck are they wearing? Apparently they are bank robbers or something but they are dressed like mountain climbers. Are they robbing a bank halfway up a mountain? Yeah. Not impressed. And I love Ellenore and Ryan, but this is awful. Adam is giving good notices, I'm glad. He says it was a good yeoman's job, not great but good, especially with how far it is from their styles. Nigel doesn't like it at all.

Mollee and Nathan are salsa-ing next. Mollee is deaf in her left ear. And I'm half deaf in my right ear! No wonder I liked her right from the start even when everyone I know was howling "She's gonna ruin the season!" Deafies unite! Good Lord. I don't think Nathan has bones. Is it cheating, not to have bones? She's doing well, but he is ridiculously good. Right up until the end when that lift went a little wonky. Adam doesn't like it. How did he not see that Nathan was awesome? Has he gone blind? I don't understand these judges. They all agree.

Noelle and my boy Russell are doing Afro-jazz. This might be really interesting. There might be a reason it's last of the evening. Okay, I didn't even know Noelle was on the stage, Russell was the only thing I saw. I think she was doing a good job, but I just couldn't see her, he was so incredible. Adam: "You know, its crazy, when I think African princess, the first person is Noelle in my head. It's amazing, it's like a list of one!"

My favourites, Legagy, Ryan and Russell were two out of three great tonight. The dance order, descending, was:

1. Channing/Victor toxic relationship contemporary
2. Ashleigh/Jakob cane jazz dance
3. Noelle/Russell Afro-jazz princess and frog
3. (tied with above) Kathryn/Legacy I Wanna Be Like You Broadway
5. Pauline/Peter hula dancer quickstep
6. Karen/Kevin Hustle
7. Mollee/Nathan samba
8. Ellenore/Ryan hip-hop bank robbers

I don't know who's going, but I hope not Ellenore and Ryan.

I was about to floss the back of the corset when I thought the distance from the edge of the corset looked odd. I measured, no, it's fine. Then realized that the front was measured wrong.
Sigh...

Increase issue

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 8:24 PM
I'm having some trouble with increases. I'm making a scarf that will be wider in the middle than at the ends. It's in 2x2 ribbing, and I want to make the ribbing wider for the wider bit. Problem is, every kind of increase I try leaves a hole underneath. :( I've tried m1-r, m1-l, bar increase/Kfb (doesn't leave a gap but I *hate* that little bar), a modified kfb that goes back into the stitch and slips it purlwise. I've tried purl increases, which seem slightly better, but still with the hole. The gauge is fairly loose (Drops Merino (dk) on US 5 needles), but not so loose that a gap like what's happening won't bug the hell out of me every time I see it.

Is there a trick to increasing on ribbing that I'm not getting, a magic increase that won't leave a hole (some of the ones I've tried normally don't, which is why I'm stumped)? Or will I just have to deal with either the bar or the holes? Any advice/opinion/commentary would be appreciated. :)

OMG!

Cable Cast-On...

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 11:49 AM
I've Googled my question and found many conflicting responses, so I'm trying here - realizing that I also may get many conflicting responses. ;)

Is the cable cast-on more stretchy or less stretchy than long-tail? And is there a time one should NOT use the cable cast-on? I think it's great and wouldn't mind using it all the time, provided there are not some specific cases where it's not advisable.

As an example, I'm knitting my second pair of Berry Hill Fingerless Mittens - here on Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/berry-hill-fingerless-mittens

I'm not a terribly tight knitter but I'd still like my cast-on row to be a bit looser. I know I can go up a needle size or two to get that, but I'm also wondering if the cable cast-on would provide a bit more looseness as well. Advice, please? Opinions? Conflicting or otherwise? ;)

Thanks!

Question

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 12:47 PM
I have found a pattern for socks that I must have and they are knit toe-up and I haven't done socks that way before.

Is it more complicated to knit socks this way? It seems so foreign to me!

Thanks for your input.

Sock assistance

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 11:40 AM
I am getting ready to make my first pair of socks. I've purchased one skein of Berroco Sox. I've been looking at patterns. Most suggest using DPN, however, I already own two, size US2 circular needles that I would like to use. I'd like to either transpose a dpn pattern to a two circular pattern, but I don't have the technical ability to do that. Does anyone have a pattern suggestion that already uses circulars, or an easy why to turn a double  pointed needle pattern into one using circulars?
